NEWLY promoted Mutare Sports Club’s strong work ethic paid off for them when they maintained their momentum in the National Rugby League after defeating hosts Zvishavane Bulls 19-0 on Saturday.Casper Bande was the first to score before Armson Makude brilliantly converted.
Zvishavane a tried to strike back but their efforts were fruitless as the visitors sealed their victory when Hope Gunda touched down just before the final whistle.
Mutare, who were promoted into the NRL this year, seized full control of the game just after the break when Blessing Chizaza added his name to the scoresheet with a try early into the second period.
But it is the way they have been going about their business that has left Mutare brimming with confidence and chairman Moss Kapumha believes they can only get better.
“We got our points against Zvishavane, no doubt, because our boys have been improving with each training session and their hard work paid off. We enjoyed the match, our scrums this time around and our forwards were good.
“The team was not nervous as they handled the ball well and if they continue with the confidence they will be a stronger side in the NRL.
“We could have had many points on the board but probably the boys were tired from the travelling,” said Kapumha.
In another encounter hosts Old Hararians trampled on Busters, thumping the Bulawayo side 47-11.
Despite being forced to change their team’s outlook because of a spate of injuries, the Old Boys were still strong enough to see off the Busters challenge.
Old Boys were missing the regular trio of Mclean Muhambi, Prayer Chitenderu and Danny Robertson but Tangai Nemadire, Leroy Mashiri and hooker Wesley Mukonoshuro were available to step in for the Harare side.
It was not only the Old Boys who were celebrating their victory, Harare Sports Club also left the field happy when they thrashed the Western Panthers 118-7.
In another match played in Gweru, Old Georgians beat Gweru 32-9.
