The 30-year-old Mutare woman who was over the weekend arrested for severely assaulting her 10-month-old baby girl in a video that went viral over the weekend, appeared in court yesterday.
She pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody to October 30 for a psychiatric examination by two doctors, in terms of the Mental Health Act.
Appearing before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court, on charges of contravening the Children’s Protection and Adoption Act, the woman submitted during mitigation that she suffers from an undisclosed mental disorder.
In the 20-second-long video, the woman is seen assaulting her baby girl with a stick, while ordering her to crawl. The baby who is facing downwards is also ordered to keep quiet as she cries helplessly.
In another video, following her arrest, she confessed to the offence and said that the father of her child was not paying maintenance.
According to the State, the assault occurred on Friday last week when the woman from Chief Zimunya area, was at her employer’s homestead with her 11-month-old baby.
She recorded the video of the assault and sent the video to the father. The matter came to light when the video went viral on social media and the police were alerted, leading to her arrest.
