Zesa will soon launch a US$62 million home solar systems project targeting at least 500 000 rural households, as part of the Government’s efforts to ensure universal access to electricity by 2030, Zesa managing director for the Eastern Region, Engineer Milton Munowadafa, has said.
The standalone power installations, to be sold on terms to the customers, will bring power to the homes without the logistical nightmare of extending the national grid into remote areas.
Speaking at the ongoing 9th Infrastructure and Investment Summit organised by Global Renaissance in Nyanga on Monday, he said: “Zesa would like to launch an innovative solar home systems project aimed at achieving universal electricity access by 2030, recognising that extending the grid, the traditional grid, to remote areas, remains a logistical problem that is economically challenging, and Zesa has devised a sustainable solution to power those under-serviced communities.
“The initiative involves the distribution of solar home systems to remote customers under a pay-as-you-go arrangement, making renewable energy accessible and affordable.
“This model not only facilitates payment flexibility but also ensures that energy is both sustainable and economically viable for rural households.
“The first phase of this ambitious project targets a roll-out to about 500 000 clients, significantly advancing Zesa’s commitment to energy inclusivity and sustainable growth.
“By leveraging on solar technology, Zesa is set to transform the energy landscape, providing reliable, clean, and affordable energy solutions to most remote corners of the nation,” Eng Munodawafa said.
Meanwhile, the president of the Zimbabwe Building Contractors Association, Dr Tinashe Manzungu urged local contractors to take advantage of the investment in many sectors of the economy to invest in infrastructure development.
He said the investment in housing, agriculture and mining also required support infrastructure such as water reticulation, roads, dams, schools and hospitals.
