A PIONEERING fire awareness and beekeeping campaign was today held in Mutasa South Constituency, aiming to mitigate the growing threat of veld fires while unlocking local economic potential through apiculture.

The event, hosted at Mount Chiremba Secondary School, sought to promote responsible land management practices and empower communities with sustainable livelihood strategies, with particular focus on beekeeping.

The endeavour plays a crucial role in augmenting household incomes and supporting biodiversity conservation.

By safeguarding forests and encouraging beekeeping practices, the constituency seeks to enhance climate resilience and accelerate economic development, ultimately fostering a more sustainable future for local communities.

Apiculture offers numerous advantages, contributing to environmental sustainability, economic growth, and community development.

It helps communities generate income from honey, beeswax, and other products, while also pollinating plants, enhancing crop yields, and maintaining ecosystem health. It also promotes biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, and rural development, empowering marginalized communities and fostering entrepreneurship.

Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza said safeguarding the natural environment is central to Government policies.

He said protecting by forests and encouraging beekeeping, the district seeks to strengthen climate resilience and accelerate economic development.

“Bees do not only contribute to pollination and food security, but also provide communities with a reliable income,” said Minister Mugadza.

The campaign was held under the theme – Prevent Veld Fires, Protect Forests and Bees, Safeguard Livelihoods and Grow the Economy – which reflects a broader national vision to unite ecological preservation with economic empowerment.

“This strategic drive marks a significant step toward achieving long-term sustainability, where protecting bees and forests directly supports growth in Mutasa and beyond,” said Minister Mugadza.
