Heather Charema in Norton
Cde Langton Mutendereki who pulled out from zanu-pf primary elections rerun in Norton to pave way for Special Advisor to the President, Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, in the forthcoming harmonised elections has pledged to support Cde Mutsvangwa.
In an interview yesterday, Cde Mutendereki dismissed rumours that he was forced to step down.
Cde Mutendereki, who is now Ambassador Mutsvangwa’s campaign manager, pledged to support Cde Mutsvangwa throughout the campaign so that the party reclaims the Norton seat from independent candidate Mr Themba Mliswa.
“Unity within the zanu-pf party is crucial at this stage where we are preparing for the upcoming harmonised elections. I will support Cde Mutsvangwa so that we claim victory in Norton. I am now Cde Mutsvangwa’s campaign manager,” he said.
He said only unity among the zanu-pf cadres would ensure that the party reclaims the seat. Cde Mutendereki also reiterated that he was never forced to step down, but said he instead, did so for the interest of the party.
“I have heard rumours that I was forced to step down from the race, those are all lies. Nobody forced me to step down. My decision was for the good of the party considering that Norton is currently not ours and the only way for us to win it back is through unity,” he said.
He added: “Everything I did was for the good of the party and it was out of my own will because we should all come out of our shells to form a united front.”
Cde Mutendereki’s decision has been endorsed by the zanu-pf leadership in Mashonaland West province with provincial political commissar Cde Simon Solomon underscoring that the former had willingly stepped down to support Cde Mutsvangwa.
