pursue his career as a professional footballer.
Mutero left Zimbabwe to settle in England in 2004 and has been on the books of English Championship side Reading for the past five years.
But the talented 18-year-old attacking midfielder told The Herald from his base in Reading, England, at the weekend that he’s had enough of staying overseas and was looking at settling in South Africa for at least two years. Mutero said he has set his sights on joining South African soccer giants Kaizer Chiefs.
“Basically, I’m courting Kaizer Chiefs to come and get me because I’m homesick. I want to be near my family in Zimbabwe for at least two years. So I want to come and play football in South Africa for one of the big teams most of all (Kaizer) Chiefs.
“It’s a big surprise for everyone because they think when you are playing in England everything is good but I really miss my family so I want Chiefs to come and get me,” Mutero said.
The Masvingo-born player also said that he is currently training with English Premiership side Queens Park Rangers but his priority lies in coming back “home” to Africa and ply his trade in the South African
Premiership. Mutero was part of the Zimbabwe Under-23 team that played in the All-Africa Games qualifiers at the beginning of the year.
The young player featured for the Young Warriors in the second round matches against Botswana in April where he came on as a second half substitute. Mutero did not play in the final qualifying round against South Africa in June and July although he was part of the Young Warriors squad that was knocked out of the competition by their neighbours from the south of the Limpopo.
And after his unsuccessful stint with the Young Warriors, Mutero returned to England to look for a new club following the expiry of his five-year deal with Reading.
There were reports that English Premiership side Stoke City were after Mutero’s signature but nothing materialised.
His agent is Nojan Bedroud who also looks after the affairs of Manchester City’s Argentine striker Carlos Tevez, Brazilian David Luiz of Chelsea and Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano.
Mutero was born on July 13, 1993 in Masvingo and moved to England in 2004 when his father passed away.
He was signed by Reading five years ago after he successfully underwent a two-week trial with the English Championship side.
He joined Reading after he was spotted by the club’s scouts while playing for another English lower division side Burton Rovers.
