STRIKES from Brian Muza and Lynoth Chikuhwa sealed a 2-0 home win for Chicken Inn over relegation bound Kwekwe United at Luveve Stadium on Saturday.
The Gamecocks dominated from the outset but missed a string of first half chances before Muza finally broke the deadlock in the 30th minute. The forward punished Kwekwe’s retreating defence with a crisp finish after relentless pressure.
Kwekwe held on gamely in the second half, but the contest was effectively over in the 72nd minute when Chikuhwa doubled the lead. The former Highlanders and Scottland FC striker, on loan from Scottland, calmly converted Michael Charamba’s pass for only his second goal in Chicken Inn colours. Charamba himself had been expertly picked out by substitute George Majika with a raking long ball that split the visitors’ backline.
Coach Joey Antipas admitted the win was more workmanlike than stylish.
“I would say the urgency was missing in our game,” said Antipas. “Our intensity was wanting. We didn’t play the best of our football, but we got the result. It was a scrappy performance. We are happy with three points which I think will take us somewhere as a team.”
The victory pushed Chicken Inn to 33 points. Kwekwe, stuck on 10 from 28 games, look doomed to the drop. Their coach Masimba Dinyero blamed the officials.
“We didn’t lose this match, it’s only that the referees were not competent enough. We need that level playing field. We didn’t fail to score but we scored, and the referees decided otherwise,” said Dinyero, who was livid after a penalty appeal was waved away.
