FORGOTTEN three-time Comrades Marathon winner, Steven Muzhingi, says he is back in fast lane of athletics after more than four years without taking to the road.
Muzhingi, who said he has recovered after he went through a lot of depression, recently took part in the anti-sanctions 21km race, in Chitungwiza.
At 41, he feels he still has a lot to offer to Zimbabwean athletics.
“I am happy that I have managed to complete this race. I just took it upon myself that I need to compete, after I had gone for over four years, without competing,’’ he said.
“This was my first time racing, in more than four years, and I never practised for the race.
“It has been hard for me, in the past four years, after I had to take care of my ailing wife, who later passed on.
“It was not easy, as her relatives wanted to take away everything I worked for, but I managed to stand my ground and now I am trying to find my footing.
“After the death of my wife, everything was not the same again, as some of her relatives took away my children.
“They even tried to see me grounded but, with the grace of God, I have since started a new chapter.’’
Muzhingi, who managed to get a job with the Airforce of Zimbabwe, said he is thankful for the support he got from all Zimbabweans.
“I think I will give back to the community by starting an athletics academy, where I will train future Muzhingis, as a way of giving back. “Getting a job was good for me, as I can now survive and it helped me to take care of my children, whom some people wanted to use against me.
“My intention is to start training now so that by next year I can compete in some races, both locally and regionally.
“I will take my training to South Africa soon so that I give the Comrades or Two Oceans races another shot.’’
