ZIMBABWE will have only two representatives at the IAAF World Indoor Championship in Sopot, Poland — Gabriel Mvumvure and Ngoni Makusha. The indoor championships get underway on Friday and will end on Sunday.
Top sprinters Makusha and Mvumvure are using the event as part of their preparations for the Olympic Games in Brazil in 2016.
Mvumvure, who is based at the Louisiana State University in the United States, is making his first appearance in a major event. While he is a 100m and 200m specialist, Mvumvure said he will be competing in a shorter race at the indoor event.
“They don’t have the 100m and 200m indoors, so I will be taking part in the 60m,” he said.
Makusha, who holds the national record in long jump and is also based in the United States, will enter his favourite discipline.
“Ngoni Makusha will be taking part in the long jump. It’s only the two of us, as far as I know and this is my first major event of the year,” said Mvumvure. Last month Makusha finished in third place at the Russian Winter indoor meeting in Moscow when he leapt 7.88m.
This was Makusha’s best jump of the year.
