MVUTHU Primary School in Umzingwane District will today play host to the Matabeleland South Ingwebu Breweries National Association of Primary Heads (Naph) provincial soccer finals. The finals will see eight schools representing the province’s seven districts fighting it out for the $1 200 first prize whose winners will join three other representatives from Matabeleland North and Bulawayo at the finals of the games set for White City Stadium next term.
Matabeleland South has seven districts, namely Beitbridge, Matobo, Mangwe, Bulilima, Gwanda, Insiza and the host province today – Umzingwane.
As the host district, Umzingwane will have two representatives, district winners and the host school, Mvuthu.
Ingwebu Breweries spokesperson, Nkosana Ndlovu said all was set for the soccer jamboree bankrolled to the tune of $35 000 by the Bulawayo-based brewery.
The second team will walk back home with $1 000 with $800 and $650 being set aside for the schools that will come out third and fourth respectively.
The rest of the participating finalists will be given $300 each.
Winners of the tournament today will proceed to Bulawayo for the finals set to determine the 2013 champions.
Bulawayo’s Induba Primary School won the 2012 edition of the tournament after beating Gwanda’s Mkhaliphe 1-0 in a final played at Pelandaba Stadium in Gwanda town.
Inaugurated in 1994, the tournament was suspended between 2009 to 2011 due to economic challenges.
