Mwaruwari debut, bosso derby

BENJANI Mwaruwari’s message ahead of his first official assignment when Highlanders face Bulawayo Chiefs on Sunday was clear: “Let’s start the season with a bang.” It was not just a throwaway line; it was a call to arms, a rallying cry from a man who knows what expectation feels like on his shoulders.

The Bosso coach, finding himself at the threshold of a new campaign, wants to hit the ground not just running but storming, and he did little to hide the fact that he is counting heavily on the power of the Highlanders faithful to help set the tone. His last appearance at Barbourfields Stadium had ended in pure, unfiltered jubilation — a 1–0 triumph over Dynamos in the Jairos Jiri Charity Cup — and as he looks ahead to Sunday, he carries the unmistakable glint of a man who believes lightning can indeed strike twice.

Mwaruwari faced the media yesterday at the Highlanders Clubhouse and shared his thoughts on the upcoming derby.

“Playing at Barbourfields Stadium is electrifying. If we start well, we play well. Let’s hope we start with a bang. I know the fans will like that energy, and they will also give us the energy we need. For now, we can talk and talk, but it’s about making sure the players do the job on the pitch,” he said.

There is something almost poetic in the way he talks about Barbourfields — as if it is not just a stadium but a living organism, breathing rhythm into the players, feeding off their hunger, amplifying their courage. And in this city, on that pitch, few things matter more than starting on the front foot.

“Everything has gone well. It is pleasing as a coach to see a team willing to fight hard. Playing against Bulawayo Chiefs is a local derby, and that speaks for itself. I have been talking to the boys so they understand what is at stake. My emphasis to them is that this game is very important for them and the entire Highlanders family. Three points will be great for everyone,” said Mwaruwari.

These were not mere tactical musings; they carried the gravity of a man fully aware that derbies are rarely gentle introductions. They are identity tests. They are emotional battlegrounds. They are the matches where players write themselves into legend — or crumble under the roar of expectation.

“We went to Botswana for team building, and we achieved that,” he said. It was a simple sentence, but it hinted at deeper work — bonding, moulding, sharpening edges and tempering nerves — the sort of unseen labour that often determines the difference between a disjointed squad and a cohesive machine. Mwaruwari speaks like a man who believes he has begun assembling something sturdy, something promising.

For coach John Nyikadzino, Sunday is less about proving a point. Having engineered the club’s return to the top flight, he now faces the next challenge: establishing stability and competitiveness at this level.

While the spotlight naturally gravitates toward the decorated former international across the technical area, Nyikadzino remains the quiet craftsman — the architect of a steady climb, the builder of a structure meant to outlast the mood swings of a single season.

His rise has always been anchored more in method than noise: quiet rebuilding, sharp discipline, unshakable principles.

Across the technical area will stand Mwaruwari, a former international star who commands significant attention. But Nyikadzino’s journey is built on method rather than glamour, steady rebuilding, discipline and structure. Derbies may ignite emotion in the stands, but on the touchline, the Chiefs coach is betting on composure. In these moments, when the crowd roars and the tempo spikes, it is often the man who remains calmest who sees the game most clearly.

Highlanders’ technical bench is rich with Bosso DNA. Club greats Mkhokheli Dube and Bekithemba Ndlovu have joined Mwaruwari in the dugout, with Malvern Moyo handling goalkeepers and Zenzo Moyo serving as team manager. It is a set-up steeped in club culture, designed to steady the team in high-pressure moments such as these. For Highlanders supporters, the mere sight of these familiar names lined up behind the team brings both nostalgia and reassurance — a reminder that the club is anchored in the hands of people who understand its heartbeat.

But Chiefs arrive with their own story. They have brought in 12 new signings to bolster their squad. Experienced defender Elvis Moyo headlines the arrivals, alongside striker Brian Muza and several additions aimed at strengthening key areas. It is a squad reshaped with purpose — fresh legs, new ideas, rebuilt ambition. Chiefs know that a derby is the perfect stage for a statement, and there is no louder statement than upsetting Highlanders at Barbourfields.

For Highlanders supporters, optimism has been building since the Charity Cup win. The whispers have grown into murmurs, and the murmurs are threatening to transform into unrestrained belief. For Chiefs, belief comes from a revamped squad eager to make an immediate statement. And so, Sunday promises to be one of those matches where narrative collides with raw emotion, where strategy meets passion, and where every kick, every tackle, every chant from the terraces carries the weight of a city that lives and breathes football.
