FORMER Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari was impressed by the national team’s performance during the Chan tournament which ended on Saturday evening in Cape Town. The youthful Libyans lifted the prestigious trophy by beating Ghana 4-3 in a sudden death penalty shootout.
The former Manchester City striker believes the crop of Warriors who took part in the Chan event have what it takes to move the country to another level in football competitions.
They impressed and put the country on the map.
Mwaruwari told Chronicle Sport: “The players did well considering they are just local players without much experience. Some of the players represented the country for the first time.
“They are now the backbone of the national team, I believe now the coach, Ian Gorowa has to build the squad around them. He can add a few players for stability. Surely we are heading in the right direction,” said the former Highlanders junior player.
Mwaruwari saluted the whole team including supporters.
Now the Warriors will focus on the Africa Cup of Nations preliminary round games and the likes of Knowledge Musona, Khama Billiat and Willard Katsande will add steel to the side.
Gorowa needs support and has shown that he knows how to assemble a winning team.
“The Warriors were determined, focused and had team spirit throughout Chan. Zimbabwe lost their third place play off to a star-studded Nigerian team 1-0 after conceding a late goal.”
