MWOS HIT TURBULENCE

Lawrence Moyo

PREMIERSHIP newcomers, MWOS, have hit turbulent waters in their quest for an historic Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title.

After an impressive unbeaten 16 matches at the start of their maiden campaign, MWOS have now lost three times in their last five matches.

This puts them 12th on the form table between MatchDay 17 and MatchDay 21.

The newcomers have insisted that their target for the 2025 season was to survive relegation and they believe they have already achieved that feat by securing 40 points, a tally they believe will be unassailable by at least four teams.

MWOS have dropped nine points over the past month and are now three points behind reigning champions, Simba Bhora after 21 matches.

They had led Joel Luphahla’s side by two points after 16 matches.

On Saturday, MWOS suffered their first defeat at Ngoni since 2023 when they were still in the Northern Region Soccer League, conceding a goal in each half against former Premiership champions FC Platinum.

Tomorrow, MWOS travel to ZPC Kariba, who are desperate to end a winless run that has seen them without victory in the last six matches.

Their last victory came against Yadah at Nyamhunga on May 31.

FC Platinum remain the only unbeaten side in the league so far and have slowly emerged as a serious contenders to dethrone Simba Bhora.

Norman Mapeza’s charges are currently 12 points behind Simba Bhora but have two games in hand with the abandoned match against Dynamos expected to be awarded to them on a 3-0 scoreline.

The other outstanding match is against struggling Manica Diamonds, which was shelved following the death of FC Platinum captain Brian Banda, in the build-up to the fixture.

Former champions Ngezi Platinum host CAPS United at the Baobab tomorrow in a clash of the form-teams.

The two teams occupy second and third place on the league standings for the last five games with CAPS United unbeaten while Ngezi Platinum’s record was spoiled by last weekend’s defeat at home to newcomers, Scottland.

Scottland came from behind to win for the second successive weekend, beating Highlanders 2-1 in the most watched match of the weekend.

Zimbabwe international striker, Terrence Dzvukamanja, scored a brace, his first goals for Scottland after joining them from South Africa at the start of the mid-season transfer window.

MWOS’ Last five games:

1-3 v Ngezi Platinum (Baobab)

1-0 v Highlanders (Barbourfields)

1-0 v Bikita Minerals (Ngoni)

0-1 v Yadah (Heart)

0-2 v FC Platinum (Ngoni)
