‘My money’ is on Liverpool, says Louis van Gaal

Cape Town — Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal believes Liverpool’s “fighting spirit” gives them the edge over Manchester City in the battle for the Premier League title.

Jurgen Klopp’s men suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season on Thursday night as the Citizens clinched a 2-1 victory at the Etihad.

The result saw City move to within four points of the Merseysiders, while Tottenham aren’t too far behind as they trail Pep Guardiola’s side by just two points after 21 games.

The Citizens’ victory prompted some to suggest they could defend their Premier League crown after getting the better of the Reds, but Van Gaal says his money is on Liverpool to end their Premier League title drought.

“If I was to put my money on one club for the league, it would be Liverpool,” Van Gaal told The Mirror.

“Liverpool have a team that can defend much better. That’s because Klopp has trained them to be a fighting force, whether they have the ball or not.

“That’s exactly what is lacking in Guardiola’s team now. City have fabulous football ideas and a sparkling way of playing but not the right fighting spirit.

“Don’t get me wrong, I still love to watch City play but the way Klopp makes Liverpool play is absolutely fantastic.”
