My wife sleeps around in lodges, man tells court

A heartbroken man shocked a court when he revealed his wife’s wayward behaviour claiming she was sleeping around in lodges with different men.

Cetshwayo Nyathi from Bulawayo said this in his counter argument at the Bulawayo Civil Court where his wife Sindiso Moyo was seeking a protection order against him.

This was after the wife said her husband was a drunkard and was always abusing her together with her children whenever he had one too many.

“Cetshwayo Nyathi is a violent man. He physically and verbally abuses me and my children. He is a drunkard and sometimes he locks us in the house and goes with the keys and comes back at night. I had been patient with him and it seems he is not changing. His problem is that he is always drunk. He is also selling alcohol at home and that is negatively affecting my children,” complained Moyo.

In his response Nyathi said he was the one who was being abused by his wife.

“I am opposed to her application. The circumstances of this application are that she has two pending cases of domestic violence and so she is trying to get a document that can help her get acquitted. I am not in any way violent. I am a professional man who knows how to conduct himself at all times.

“I have never laid a hand on her for the three years we have stayed together. This is despite the fact that she has done terrible things to me. I have found her in lodges with other men. Yes, I do drink but I am not a drunkard. I have tried to recover from all the abuse she subjected me to,” said Nyathi.

He said Moyo and her children were not respecting him.

“She and her children and the maid treat me as nobody in my house. I do the chores on my own and I am surprised why she is still staying in my house if I am abusing her as she has alleged. Just imagine she is staying with her children at my expense. She, however, wants this application to disarm me of my rights as a man so that she can freely engage in immoral activities,” fumed Nyathi.

In a bid to maintain peace between the estranged parties, the presiding magistrate Marygold Ndlovu ordered the couple to live peacefully by not physically or verbally harassing each other.
