POLICE in Banket have launched investigations into the death of a 40-year-old local man who was recently found hanging from a tree, with his feet touching the ground, thereby raising doubts that he committed suicide.
According to a police report, George Mpofu (40) had a scuffle with his wife Nyadzisai Zungunde (39) at Oxford Farm in Banket.
Circumstances are that on August 11 at around 3 pm, Zungunde had a misunderstanding with Mpofu along the road leading to Marowa Farm compound.
The now-deceased punched his wife on the mouth, resulting in her losing a tooth. She retaliated by hitting him on the forehead with a brick and a stick on the back.
Mpofu is said to have tried to strangle his wife and she fought back by biting his right ear.
They later stopped fighting and agreed to seek counselling from Tapfuma Nzou.
However, on their way there, Mpofu reportedly changed his mind and threatened to commit suicide.
Zungunde then proceeded to the farm compound and informed police Constable Charles Murefu, who promised to inform ZRP Banket the next morning.
The following day, Mpofu’s body was found hanging from a tree that is about 500m from where he fought with his wife.
Mpofu was semi-naked and his blood-stained t-shirt was found three metres away.
He also had blood clots in his right ear.
“Mpofu’s legs were touching the ground. A wooden stick measuring about 1 metre was recovered and it was blood-stained,” read part of a police memo.
Police are still waiting for post-mortem results from Banket Hospital.
