FORMER Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi, who was ordered to remain in custody pending finalisation of his outstanding court matters, yesterday filed an application challenging his placement on remand.
Mzembi, who was back in court for routine remand, filed his written application through his lawyer Mr Killian Mandiki, before Harare regional magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei.
The State will also file its response and the ruling will be delivered on Friday.
Mzembi is facing charges of theft of trust property and criminal abuse of office.
The development comes after magistrate Ndirowei on June 17 confirmed three outstanding warrants of arrest against Mzembi.
The warrants were issued following the former minister’s failure to appear in court since November 2018.
Magistrate Ndirowei dismissed Mzembi’s application to cancel the warrants, ruling that his default was deliberate.
The former Cabinet minister is accused of failing to return his passport by November 19, 2018, and missing a court appearance on January 18, 2019.
The charges stem from allegations that he converted televisions worth US$2 million — bought for fan parks during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa — to personal use while serving as Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry.
