A FAMILY from Mzilikazi suburb in Bulawayo has voiced deep concern over his whereabouts and safety following his sudden disappearance amid community hostility.
Zibonele Mlalazi’s family claims that he went into hiding after a violent backlash from members of the local community, who have made it clear they do not welcome him.
A family member, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that the trouble started when Mlalazi was caught in a compromising situation with Busani Ndlovu.
“It all began on Independence day afternoon on 18 April 2022 when Zibonele was seen with Busani in a way that raised eyebrows. Later, we found out they were involved in a gay relationship,” they said.
The situation quickly escalated when an angry mob attacked the two men, leading to Ndlovu suffering fatal injuries.
“The mob stormed the scene and attacked them,” one relative revealed.
Police were latter called, and some bystanders reported that the police also assaulted Zibonele and his partner before they could be handcuffed and whisked away on a police van to Mzilikazi Police Station.
However, subsequent reports indicate that the beginning of May 2022, Busani was further assaulted by police while in custody, and he died from injuries sustained on the head.
The Mzilikazi family claims that the last time they saw him was when he was in police custody.
“We were told he escaped from police custody on the 21st May 2022, and now the police are searching for him,” the family member added, expressing their fears for his safety.
Adding to the community’s rejection, residents have reportedly made it clear that they do not want Mlalazi living among them.
“The community has banished him, saying his conduct is taboo and that it could bring bad luck to the area,” the relative explained.
The community’s stance has effectively ostracized Mlalazi, leaving him vulnerable and alone.
The family is pleading with authorities to protect Mlalazi, emphasizing that he is in danger.
“We are worried about his safety. We just want justice and for him to be safe,” they said.
As tensions remain high, the case highlights ongoing challenges surrounding acceptance and social cohesion of same-sex groups within the community. The family hopes that the situation will be resolved peacefully and that Mlalazi will find safety away from the hostility of his neighbours.
