Mzilikazi plays to mirror societal ills

teacher in charge of the drama group, Prichard Mpofu, said the school had over the years produced very good plays focusing on issues affecting society.
“Mzilikazi High School has over the years been a reputable institution in producing some of the best plays which deal with things every individual in Zimbabwe experiences and also society’s ills.
“Some of the subjects which are depicted in the plays are domestic violence, rape and HIV and Aids which many of these students have experienced at some point in their lives,” he said.
Mpofu said his aim was to revive the spirit of acting among pupils so that they emulate what the outgoing drama club used to do.
“The former drama club was always a marvel to watch on stage and my aim is to instil that acting spirit in the current pupils.
“I truly believe that they have it in them, that is why I want to encourage them to bring out that potential on stage,” he said.
The teacher-in-charge cum co-ordinator said at the moment they had so many performances lined up for the year.
“Even though we are still structuring the whole process of coming up with a cohesive drama group, there are a lot of plays lined up in our calendar,” said Mpofu.
Situated along Old Victoria Falls road, the school is near arts and culture academies such as Amakhosi Theatre and Mzilikazi Art and Craft Centre, which the institution can utilise to its own advantage.
With such an initiative of reviving the acting spirit under way, the school believes this year is going to be a very different one.
“Our school has a number of talented students and the school is looking forward to engaging professionals from the city’s arts and culture academies which are to sharpen the skills of students participating in arts,” he said.
Mzilikazi “Mgandani kaMatshobana” has over the years been well known not only for producing stars from the acting arena but it has also nurtured and groomed legendary soccer players such as Peter Ndlovu and the Ngodzo brothers.
