Award-winning musician Mzoe7, Mr Gagagu (real name Mzobanzi Mlauzi) is using Men’s Month to amplify a conversation that often remains hidden behind closed doors – men’s mental health.

While many know him for his music and great fashion sense, Mzoe 7 has increasingly become recognised for his commitment to community development and youth empowerment. Throughout June, the artiste has been engaging learners and young people through school visits and community outreach programmes, encouraging boys and men to speak openly about their emotional and psychological struggles and seek support when faced with life’s challenges.

His passion for mental health advocacy stems from the strong sense of community he grew up in and personal experiences that changed his perspective on life.

“I’ve always been a community-centred person. We grew up in a setup where neighbours were like parents, brothers and relatives. We could talk about almost everything because all we had was each other,” said Mzoe 7.

However, he believes that as people grow older, that sense of togetherness often fades as individuals become consumed by personal ambitions, work and daily responsibilities.

The loss of several friends to suicide became a turning point in his life, inspiring him to take action and create spaces where men could find support.

“As we grew older and became focused on our individual goals, we stopped making time to check in on each other, reflect and talk about what we were going through. Along the way, I lost friends to suicide, and it was a wake-up call for me.”

Determined to make a difference, Mzoe7 established the Majita Let’s Talk Initiative, a platform designed to create safe spaces where boys and men can openly discuss mental health challenges while receiving support and guidance.

“That experience inspired me to establish the Majita Let’s Talk Initiative, which helps boys and men facing mental health challenges. It also empowers them with practical life skills and assists in dealing with issues related to drugs and bullying,” he said.

Recognising the critical role parents play in shaping young people’s lives, he has expanded the programme to include parental engagement sessions aimed at helping families navigate sensitive issues affecting children and teenagers.

“God has helped me understand this gift of helping others,” said Mzoe7.
A key pillar of the initiative is its schools outreach programme, through which Mzoe7 interacts directly with learners through motivational talks and interactive discussions. During these engagements, he addresses topics such as behaviour, bullying, substance abuse, wellness and career guidance, equipping young people with tools to make informed life choices. So far, he has visited schools including Townsend High School and Lobengula High School.

“School children are very important. I always visit willing schools to talk mostly about behaviour, bullying, drugs, wellness and career paths. When young people are properly groomed, we secure the future of our nation,” he said.

As Father’s Day approaches, Mzoe7 has urged men across the country to prioritise both their emotional and physical well-being.

“I’d love to wish good health to all men, both mentally and physically, and also encourage them to open up when facing challenges. Find someone to talk to because it really helps,” he said.

The musician believes promoting mental wellness should be a collective responsibility. He called on communities, organisations and individuals to work together in creating supportive environments where men and boys can express themselves without fear of judgement.

“Those willing to help or join the initiative are most welcome. We can change more lives together. This is not just a Mzoe 7 initiative. I want communities to take responsibility for creating positive change when it comes to mental health issues,” he said.
