So far Zimbabwe have got two long-distance runners in the men and women’s section — Cutbert Nyasango and Sharon Tavengwa — who have qualified for the London Games with an A Standard.
The 2012 London Olympic Games will be held from July 27 to August 12.
Tavengwa is the latest athlete to qualify for the London Games after she ran 2hours 35minutes in a marathon held in the Netherlands last weekend, surpassing the qualifying time of 2 hours 37 minutes.
Naaz director for coaching and talent identification, Tendai Tagara, said they are hoping to have at least one more athlete in the men’s category qualifying with an A Standard for them to be able to field a complete team of three athletes in London.
“We were supposed to camp this month but we are now planning to do that at the end of May because some of the athletes are still outside the country.
“Nkosiyazi Sibanda is still in Britain preparing for the London Marathon and Wirimayi Juwawo is preparing for a race to be held on the first week of May in South Africa. The closing date for long-distance runners qualifiers is May 20.
“We have five people with B Standard times including Juwawo and Sibanda and we are hoping that out of the five athletes we will get one or two more who will set the A Standard qualifying time because we are supposed to field three athletes in each category (men and women) and we cannot have two people who qualified with a B Standard.
“We are hoping and praying that we get one or two more athletes with A Standard qualifying times so that we can carry a full contingent.
“If we get one athlete who gets the A Standard time, we will then choose one athlete among those that have qualified with the B Standard depending on who will have the closest time,” said Tagara.
Tagara said they are happy now that Tavengwa qualified with an A Standard time and is likely to be the only female long-distance runner to represent Zimbabwe at the London Games.
“We are proud to be sending a qualified woman for the Games. We are happy because most of the local female runners have nwt shown interest in qualifying for the Olympics as most of them are now participating in ultra-marathon races,” said Tagara.
