adminUnder the proposed rules, athletics officials like track judges, time keepers, marshals and starters will not be allowed to handle any event unless they possess the basic qualifications for that level of competition.
Harare Athletics Board vice-chairman, Phinias Ziniwa, yesterday said a database of qualified officials is being compiled.
“Starting this year, it will be mandatory for all officials to be in possession of the requisite basic qualifications for the level of competition they will be handling.
“As HAB, we are holding an elementary course where we issue certificates to enable people to handle competitions.
“I know that every province has its own administrative arm which runs athletics and should be equipping its officials if there is need,” said Ziniwa.
As part of their preparations for the season, HAB held a three-day basic elementary athletics course for student teachers at Belvedere Technical Teachers College in Harare.
The course started on Friday and finished yesterday with 91 participants receiving certificates from the college’s principal Patrick Chinhoro yesterday.
Ziniwa said the trainee teachers will be added to the HAB’s officials’ database. Basically, we have physical education teachers attending this basic course and it’s part of their syllabus anyway.
“Soon we should be using the participants to handle our competitions and I hope they will improve their survival skills in the field when they go out for teaching practise next year.
“The course involved theory and practical lessons in track events, jumps and throws.
