Harare – The National Aids Council (NAC) said on Monday over $24 million has been remitted in the form of Aids levy during the first nine months of the year, surpassing the projected target of $22.4 million.
The government of Zimbabwe introduced a compulsory three percent Aids levy on all employees with taxable incomes in 1999 to fund Aids mitigation programmes.
Revenue from the Aids levy goes to the National Aids Trust Fund to finance the co-ordination, monitoring and evaluation of Aids programmes.
NAC finance director Albert Manenji told New Ziana over $24 million had been collected from January to September.
“For the first nine months of the year, a total of $24, 6 million has been collected from taxpayers, an increase from $22.4 million collected last year during the same period.
“However, the notable increase in revenue can be attributed to the fact that salaries have been steadily going up over the months and also because individuals contribute more to aids levy than corporates, hence the improvement in remittance,” he said.
Manenji said NAC was targeting to collect $33 million by end of year.
“Our fourth quarter has the highest in collection because of bonuses. Since we are only $8.4 million short, its possible to surpass the target,” he added.
