MARVELOUS Nakamba is carrying a calm confidence as the Warriors step towards another AFCON finals campaign.
It’s a journey that has tested both his resolve and the team’s unity.
The captain has become the steady hand guiding Zimbabwe through one of their toughest stretches in recent years.
He took the armband in November 2023, under then coach Baltemar Brito, stepping into a group still recovering from an 18-month FIFA suspension.
His arrival marked a fresh phase after the long spell that ended with Knowledge Musona’s reign.
The leadership role is shared among senior players – Marshall Munetsi and Teenage Hadebe – but Nakamba has been the anchor.
He has carried the responsibility while navigating the lingering obstacles that continue to weigh on the national team. The most pressing remains the absence of a FIFA-approved stadium, which has turned every match into a logistical puzzle.
Even with those setbacks, there is a shift in mood.
Zimbabwe booked their ticket to Morocco for next month’s AFCON finals and Nakamba has helped keep the group focused.
Under new coach Marian “Super Mario” Marinica, the Warriors bounced back from a 3-1 loss to Algeria to beat Qatar 2-1 in Doha, a result that lifted spirits inside the camp. The win comes at the right time, especially with a tough Group F looming in Morocco.
Zimbabwe will meet Egypt and South Africa, two continental giants, along with a rising Angola side.
“We are profoundly grateful to every Zimbabwean, from those at home to our diaspora across the globe and the incredible crowds in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Your support is indispensable; without it, we feel incomplete.
“The victory against Qatar has injected a surge of confidence and renewed zeal into the squad, providing vital momentum just weeks before the prestigious AFCON tournament.
“As players, we leave everything on the pitch. We are convinced that with the nation’s support, and all of us pulling in one direction, we will achieve our objectives. This is the moment we need that solidarity most.”
He added:
“We must acknowledge the ZIFA leadership, under president Nqobile Magwizi, for organising these critical international friendlies.
“This level of preparation is exactly what we need.
“We were also encouraged by the visit from the Minister of Tourism, Honourable Barbara Rwodzi, who travelled to Saudi Arabia to be with the team, despite our disappointing 3-1 loss to Algeria.
“To the corporate world and all football stakeholders, your partnership is not just welcome, it is essential. We dearly need you to chip in and support our efforts as we represent the nation.”
Nakamba also shared a personal highlight from the Qatar match. He lined up alongside 20-year-old midfielder Prosper Padera, the youngster who first rose to prominence at the Marvelous Nakamba Foundation Under-17 tournament in Bulawayo in 2022. Padera, now with Finnish side SJK Seinajoki, has impressed the captain with his progress.
“I am happy for him, the progress he has made and the determination that runs through his blood.
“It’s good for him to share the dressing room with the big boys. “It was an honour to be on the same pitch fighting for the same purpose in national colours,” said Nakamba.
