Nakamba to extend Wednesday stay

MARVELOUS NAKAMBA would love to stick around for Sheffield Wednesday’s English League One football fight next season, he says.

The 32-year-old Zimbabwean joined the Owls on transfer deadline day a couple of weeks ago, signing a short-term contract until the end of the season after Luton Town agreed to a mutual termination of his deal there.

He didn’t have to wait long for his debut, coming on against Swansea City, but is yet to make his first start for the club having been an unused substitute in the clash with Millwall over the weekend.

Nakamba will have 14 games now to showcase what he’s all about, and he’s looking at the potential of signing on for Wednesday’s battle in the third tier next year following their relegation from the Championship.

He knows, however, that if that is to happen then he needs to perform.

“Of course, but it obviously depends on my performances,” he said when asked about a future with the Owls. “It’s also about us coming together, because it must go both ways. I have to give everything and show myself on the pitch for the club.

“The club is really massive, and with time it’ll get back to where it belongs. I definitely wouldn’t say no to anything.”

And he’s hoping to make an impression when given the chance, telling supporters what they can expect to see from him when he does get minutes out there on the field.

“I’m someone who is aggressive,” ‘Marv’ went on to say. “I like to go in for the ball. But I’m also there to get it and give it to my teammates going forward . . . I’m a hard-working player who always tries to be on the front foot to try and get passes forward. I’m always trying to win first and second balls, winning tackles — I’ll give everything. Heart, head, everything. Fans can expect somebody who’ll be there for the club.”

With the experience he possesses, and the number of appearances he’s made at Premier League level, you’d expect the midfield man to get an opportunity at Bramall Lane against Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon.

If there was ever a time to stake a claim for a longer contract at S6, that’d be the game to do it. — thestar.co.uk
