ZIMBABWE international Marvellous Nakamba is on the verge of ending his free-agent spell after emerging as a leading target for Greek Super League side Panetolikos, with sources indicating talks have reached an advanced stage and a deal is now close.
Nakamba, 32, has been without a club since leaving Sheffield Wednesday at the expiry of his contract earlier this month.
The experienced midfielder has attracted interest from several clubs in England, but Panetolikos appear to have won the race for his signature as they seek to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
A source close to the player told Zimpapers Sports Hub that negotiations are progressing well and only final details remain before the move can be completed.
“Everything is moving in the right direction. The discussions have been positive and both parties are keen to conclude the deal as soon as possible. Marvellous wants to get back on the pitch, play regularly and enjoy football again after a difficult period,” said the source.
The source added that Nakamba carefully considered his next move after becoming a free agent, with the priority being a club where he can feature consistently.
“He had opportunities, but he wanted the right project. At this stage of his career, regular football is more important than anything else. He still believes he has a lot to offer both at club level and for Zimbabwe.”
Should the transfer be finalised, Nakamba will begin a new chapter in Greece after a career that has taken him through France, the Netherlands, Belgium and England.
His honours include the Belgian Pro League title with Club Brugge, the Dutch Cup with Vitesse Arnhem and promotion to the English Premier League with Luton Town.
Moreso, should the transfer be completed, Nakamba will join fellow Zimbabwe international Tino Kadewere in the Greek Super League.
Kadewere plays for Aris Thessaloniki, having joined the club in July 2025, and a Panetolikos move would place the two Warriors teammates in the same domestic competition.
