Kambuzuma residents have been in a state of panic after being exposed to high-voltage naked electricity cables left unattended after vandalism by copper cable thieves.
The electricity cables which are a death trap, hanging dangerously, were left unattended in the Section 6, Kambuzuma.
Residents including Mrs Everjoy Katiyo appealed to Zesa officials to urgently address the issue.
“Our plea is for the cables to be protected. As it stands this is a death trap. Zesa officials should swiftly intervene,” she said.
Mr Adrian Kasinamhaka said they fear for children who may be exposed to the cables while playing outside.
“This is a dangerous situation considering that most kids in these high-density suburbs play outside with some walking barefooted.
“Our hope is the issue will be treated with the seriousness it deserves so that we save lives,” he said.
ZESA Corporate Communications, Mr George Manyaya said the power utility lost US$4 million worth of power infrastructure to vandalism and theft last year.
Vandalism and theft of ZESA property have resulted in some areas going for long periods without electricity.
Addressing the nation on the ongoing load shedding last month, ZESA executive chairman Dr Sydney Gata said vandalism is among the contributing factors to power outages.
“Vandalism cases have been on the rise.
“For the last 5 years to June 2024, 7186 cases have been recorded. This translates to a cost to the Utility of US$24,4 million for that period (averaging US$4 million a year),” he said.
Laws against vandalism have been tightened and deterrent sentences will continue to be imposed on those who vandalise and steal electricity infrastructure.
