NAMIBIAN Prime Minister Dr Hage Geingob has applauded police chiefs from Sadc member-states for creating a forum where they exchange experiences in combating crime in the region.Dr Geingob urged the police chiefs to continue strengthening their co-operation and propel development in the region.
He made the remarks while officially opening the 8th Edition of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation (SARPCCO) Games 2013 yesterday at Independence Stadium.
Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri and senior Zimbabwe Republic Police officers were among delegates from the region who attended the ceremony.
“The police chiefs of our respective countries in the region recognised the need to create a forum whereby our operational police men and women can engage each other and share experiences on policing standards,” said Prime Minister Geingob.
He said games were important in that the officers engaged in fruitful interaction among themselves to share their policing norms, traditions and values. This, he said, fostered regional friendship and enhanced cultural co-operation through sports.
Dr Geingob said during the first SARPCCO Annual General Meeting held at Swakopmund in Namibia in 1999, the police chiefs resolved to promote peace and tranquillity in the region through sporting activities.
Head International Police (Interpol) regional bureau based in Harare Mr Chilika Simfukwe said the organisation would remain alive and supporting the need for a crime-free environment in the region.
