WINDHOEK. — The President of Angola, Joao Lourenco will pay a State Visit to Namibia from May 3 to 5 and participate in the 40th anniversary of the Cassinga Massacre, on invitation of the country’s President Hage Geingob.
Namibia on May 4 will commemorate the Cassinga Massacre in which the then South African Apartheid regime attacked the Cassinga Refugee Camp, and killed thousands of Namibian civilians and hundreds of Angolans on May 4, 1978.
The Ministry of International Relations yesterday in a statement, said during the commemoration, the Angolan leader will lay a wreath at Heroes Acre and participate as guest of honour at the event.
“As we pay tribute to these heroes and heroines, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice that has brought about our freedom and independence, Namibia has decided to commemorate this anniversary at the national level at Heroes Acre, on May 4,” added Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International relations Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
Meanwhile, the International Relations Ministry has also invited all Cassinga survivors and others to attend the national event to be held in the capital Windhoek to pay tribute to the heroes and heroines who perished in Cassinga. – Xinhua
