Zimbabwe is proud and inspired by First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa’s attainment of a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD) in Tourism and Hospitality Management from the Midlands State University (MSU), Vice President Kembo Mohadi has said.

In a message through his Chief of Staff, Dr Clever Chirume yesterday, VP Mohadi and family joined “the nation in congratulating the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa for graduating with a PhD in Tourism and Hospitality”.

“The nation is really inspired by your achievement, Makorokoto, Amhlope, Congratulations.”

VP Mohadi added that the achievement by the First Lady should inspire more women and the girl child to pursue education up to the highest level, especially given that Dr Mnangagwa attained her doctorate despite her busy schedule.

The First Lady’s thesis for the doctorate is titled; “The Efficiency of Hotels in Zimbabwe: A Data Envelopment Analysis Approach”.

She graduated last week, joining 6 479 graduates, with 53 percent of them being women. In an interview after the graduation ceremony last week, President Mnangagwa said he was charmed by the First Lady’s commitment to elevate herself academically.

He said Dr Mnangagwa is a hard-working, determined and goal-oriented woman who showed a lot of commitment towards her studies during the course of her degree programme.

“I am overjoyed because when we got married, she only had her Ordinary Level passes. She expressed her willingness to learn and I encouraged her because at that time I already had my Law degrees.

“I then helped her through Advanced Level, before she took her first degree. She never stopped until she attained a PhD, which I do not even have because I only ended at Masters Level,” he said.

The President said he was happy that the First Lady has “reached the top and actually, she deserves it because at home she is always reading in the library”.

“The statistics show, even this graduation there are more female students than we have male students.

“At every university, at a graduation ceremony, I notice this, which is very good for the girl child. I believe that the girl child in future will be responsible for developing and providing leadership to our motherland, Zimbabwe,” he said.

Dr Mnangagwa holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc) in Hotel and Tourism Administration from Switzerland and has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from MSU, and many other accolades from different institutions.
