Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona is set to provide an update next week on the status of roadworks being carried out across Zimbabwe.
The announcement came during a National Assembly question-and-answer session, highlighting the Government’s ongoing commitment to improving the nation’s infrastructure. Zimbabwe’s road network is crucial for economic development, facilitating trade and investment.
However, some projects have faced delays due to funding shortages.
“We had suspended works on some roads because of the unavailability of funds,” Minister Mhona explained. “However, I am happy to inform the House that we have resumed works on some roads, like the portion from Beitbridge along the Harare-Beitbridge highway. Soon, we will be focusing on the Harare-Chirundu part. As you know, this highway is an important trade corridor.”
The Harare-Beitbridge highway is vital for connecting Zimbabwe to South Africa and other SADC and East and Central African countries via Chirundu.
It serves as a major route for transporting goods and people crossing borders to seek employment and to buy and sell various wares.
Added Minister Mhona: “May I also inform the House that next week, I will present a report in the House on all the roadworks we are carrying out in all 10 provinces.”
The Government has prioritised the refurbishment of the country’s road network as a key enabler for investment and ease of doing business.
In addition to roadworks, the Government is also addressing educational needs. Primary and Secondary Education Deputy Minister Angeline Gata said efforts are underway to finalise a policy for the provision of free basic education.
“The Government is finalising the policy on free basic education, and in the meantime, pupils in need are being assisted through the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM),” she stated.
Deputy Minister Gata reiterated the Government’s commitment that no learner should drop out of school due to non-payment of fees.
The initiatives reflect the Government’s broader strategy to enhance infrastructure and education, vital components for sustainable development in Zimbabwe towards the attainment of an empowered upper-middle-income society.
