THE Zimbabwe Volleyball Association will stage their second 20-team beach volleyball tournament at the Highfields Community Centre in Harare from January 31 to February 1. Elliot Mupariwa one of the event organisers said the two-day tournament will see 10 men and 10 women’s pairs from around the country competing.

“We are expecting 20 teams to participate of which 10 will compete in the men’s category and the other 10 in the women’s.

“We invited teams from all the provinces,” said Mupariwa.

He said most of the teams that have been invited to play in the tournament had represented the country at international level.

“Most of the teams have players who have represented the country at international competitions,” he said.

Mupariwa said they were working on a programme to promote beach volleyball around the country and the target was the youths.

“Beach volleyball was introduced in the country in 2011 but many youths are not aware of the sport hence the programme to promote it,” he said.

Nyashadzashe Takawira, Panashe Chiguta, Media Mafuta and Felistus Chakabvewo who were crowned champions of this year’s first beach volleyball tournament are also expected to be part of the event.

Mupariwa said they have already started preparations for the African World Beach Volleyball qualifiers that will be held next month.

“We have already started preparing for the African World Championship qualifiers to be held on February 14 to 22 but the venue and host country is yet to be announced,” he said.

The Beach volleyball World Championships will be held in the Netherlands from June 26 to July 5.

Mupariwa said they will have at least two national tournaments every month that will be rotated in various cities in the country.
