National hero Dr Gata laid to rest

THE late national hero Dr Sydney Zikuzo Gata has been laid to rest at the national Heroes Acre.

President Mnangagwa presided at the event.

The President handed over the National Flag to Dr Gata’s widow, Honourable Angeline Gata; who is also the Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education.

President Mnangagwa urged the nation to emulate the patriotism and commitment to duty exhibited by Dr Gata.

“I challenge you all to be inspired by the traits of patriots like Dr Gata. The late Dr Gata was a guru in the engineering and energy landscape. He was a trailblazer and always deemed himself as part of the people,” he said.

The late Dr Gata passed on passed last Thursday after a short illness.

He was 79.

The late national hero is survived by his wife, nine children and six grandchildren.

Dr Gata was Zimbabwe’s first Black general manager of the Electricity Supply Commission (ESC).

With experience spanning decades, he became a towering figure in Zimbabwe’s energy landscape, an engineer, strategist and academic.
