National hero Victor Matemadanda’s body flown to Gokwe

The body of the national hero Cde Victor Matemadanda was airlifted from Charles Gumbo Barracks to his rural home in Gokwe on Wednesday morning.

Mourners have gathered in Gokwe to bid farewell to their gallant son.

Midlands Minister of State Owen Ncube will preside over the funeral programme in Gokwe. From Gokwe the body will be flown to Village 9C Golden Resettlement where it will lie in state at the family homestead on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the body of the national hero will be flown back to Harare where it will lie in state at his Mt Pleasant Heights house ahead of burial on Friday.

Cde Matemadanda died on Saturday night after a short illness. President Mnangagwa conferred national hero status on Cde Matemadanda on Monday and he will be buried at the National Heroes Acre.

A war veteran, Cde Matemadanda held senior positions in the liberation struggle fighters’ body, in the ruling party Zanu PF where he was once the National Political Commissar and in Government as Deputy Minister of War Veterans. At the time of his death, he was Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique and Eswatini.
