THE Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) has hailed the progress the sport is making after the senior national schoolgirls’ team beat their Zambian counterparts in a five-day Test series.

The Test series that ended on Sunday at Arundel High School in Harare saw a total of 15 games being played involving the Under-16 A and B as well as the Under-18 A and B teams.

The Zimbabwe Under-18 A team beat Zambia Under-18 2-1 in the final while the national Under-16 side lost 0-2 to the visitors.

Head of the Zimbabwe schoolgirls’ hockey team Jackie Robertson was impressed with the girls’ performances and believes the sport is on the right path.

“We’re happy with the girls’ performances because they showed great character on the field. They are really showing improvement and I believe they will be stars one day,” said Robertson.

HAZ vice-president Humphrey Chigwedere said the Test series was good as the girls came up against competitive opposition.

“The tour was a success and the girls represented us well. From here we will sit down and assess the performance because learning was the main reason for the Test series and I believe we learnt a great deal,” said Chigwedere.

The series also gave the Zimbabwean selectors an opportunity to assess girls that are likely be drafted into the senior women’s squad that will take part in the Africa Olympic Qualifiers in Johannesburg, South Africa, next month.
