THE Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) president Johnson Madhuku has said his association is working on affiliating to the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 before the end of October to afford young athletes larger opportunities of competing at international level.
“We held a conference with the regional confederation and it was resolved that there is a need to affiliate to the council since we’re a small association. We’ve been asked to send our constitution and strategic plan to them and then we wait for their response,” said Madhuku.
He said associating with AUSC Region 5 would allow Cossasa to apply for funding and assistance on administrative and human resources issues to facilitate their (Cossasa) games.
The Cossasa board is set to deliberate on the strategic plan later this month in Johannesburg, South Africa before it is forwarded to the AUSC Region 5 headquarters in Botswana.
Naph president Cynthia Khumalo, who was Team Zimbabwe’s chef de mission for the just-ended Cossasa ball games in Bulawayo, gave the tournament a thumbs-up saying they were impressed with the athletes’ levels of performance.
“We’re happy as a country to have won in this event. As hosts, we delivered what was expected of us by winning more gold medals. We’re grateful to the coaching personnel who helped train the athletes during the team’s camp ahead of the competitions,” said Khumalo.
Zimbabwe scooped a total of 13 medals, eight gold, three silver and two bronze, in the games held from August 27-29 to finish tops ahead of last year’s winners Botswana.
Team Zimbabwe won gold in the Under-13 boys’ football, Under-17 boys’ and girls’ basketball, Under-17 boys’ and girls’ tennis, Under-13 and Under-17 netball and Under-17 boys’ volleyball.
The 2016 Cossasa ball games will be held in Botswana while Namibia will host the association’s athletics event.
