TWELVE schools from the southern parts of the country made it through to the Zimbabwe Schools Quiz provincial finals and will represent their provinces in the inaugural National Schools Quiz Tournament set for Harare. The events, which were concurrently held nationally on Saturday, took place in all the country’s 10 provinces and were organised by the Book of African Records.
Book of African Records Editor-in-Chief, Errol Muzawazi, said the finals will be held next month on a date yet to be announced.

Each province came out with the top four schools that will participate in the national finals to be produced and aired by ZBCtv.
Bulawayo Province will be represented by Gifford High, Eveline High and Sizane High and Masiyephambili College.

Mzingwane, Thekwane, Embakwe High and Usher will represent Matabeleland South and Matabeleland North will be represented by Mosi Oa Tunya, Kariyangwa, Guebuza High and Pashu High.

Midlands will be represented by Chaplin High School, Thornhill High School, Mkoba High School and Shungu High School.
Of the 60 points that were potentially attainable in a session, Mzingwane High School in Matabeleland South scored the highest with 53 points, followed by Goromonzi High School in Mashonaland East with 52 points and Howard High in Mashonaland Central with 51 points.

Participating pupils across the country have welcomed the revival of the televised high schools’ quiz which was last aired in 2000.
According to a research by the Book of African Records, high schools’ quiz was the third most watched programme on television in Zimbabwe, after the main news bulletin and the musical programme Mutinhimira WeMimhanzi/Ezomgido.

“We are glad that once again edutainment for viewers through senior level quiz is back. The content of the sessions, which are biased towards Africa, is helping to create and spread new knowledge on Zimbabwe and Africa, which is the mission of the Book of African Records” he said.
The winning team from the national finals shall be granted scholarships to any State university of their choice by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education.

The first runner-up team, together with a representative of the school, will visit Egypt for an educational trip while the second runner-up, together with a representative of the school, will travel to Victoria Falls.

According to the quiz’s regulations, there will be questions in English Language, Literature in English, History, Geography, Science and Nature, Arts, Culture, Religion, Sport and General Knowledge.
