Renovations at the National Sports Stadium (NSS) are now at an advanced stage, with the facility expected to reopen before the kickoff of the 2026 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.
Sports, Arts, Recreation and Culture Minister Anselem Sanyatwe said he has inspected the progress and witnessed contractors “putting in the work” to ensure the giant facility meets required standards.
“I have personally witnessed the contractors working flat out day and night and I have given them the deadline for them to complete,” he said.
“The work is supposed to be completed by the beginning of the 2026 season. I have given them time to tie up the loose ends, so to be precise, it should be before the beginning of the season.”
Giving a post-Cabinet briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere gave details of the progress made so far.
He said extensive work had been completed on the drainage systems for both the main pitch and the B-Arena, with lawn planting for the B-Arena set to begin shortly.
Significant progress has also been made on key infrastructure components.
“Works on electricals are 90 percent complete, ablution facilities (58 percent), turnstiles (65 percent) and water reticulation (90 percent),” Dr Muswere said.
The upgrades are expected to bring the stadium closer to meeting international standards, paving the way for the return of top-flight football and potentially international fixtures.
The reopening of the NSS will provide a major boost to local football, which has struggled with limited access to CAF-approved venues in recent years.
