VETERAN Marabi and Afro-Jazz icon Jeys Marabini, showed why he remains one of Zimbabwe’s most respected live performers as he delivered a masterful performance during the launch of his latest album, Umjolo, in Bulawayo this past weekend.
The show was more than just a launch, it marked the beginning of a national and regional tour that will see Marabini take Umjolo to cities including Harare, Gwanda, Beitbridge, Kadoma, and Mutare before heading beyond Zimbabwe’s borders for performances already lined up at Southern African music festivals.
“I released this album in July, and it has been enjoying massive airplay on local radio stations as well as outside the country. This is a sign that people really appreciate my craft, and I’m humbled,” Marabini said.
“As a way of listening to my fans’ call, I had to stage a live show at Palace Hotel, where I performed the entire new album. I really enjoyed myself as I finally took the project to the people, who showered me with immense love in return.
“I’m now working on a national and regional tour and will soon perform in Harare, Kadoma and other local places before I take the project to South Africa and other regional countries,” he added.
Those who attended the launch saw Marabini prove that experience has refined his craft. The 10-track Umjolo album blends meaningful lyrics with rich sounds, appealing to audiences of all ages.
On the night, Marabini performed the album’s tracks, Ngezama Lobolo, Themba Lami Likuwe, Yini Lo Mona, Mazwane, Thul’ Ulalele, Nomakanjan, Inkemenkeme, Ulal’ Ephenduka, We Mnano Muntu and the fan-favourite title track Umjolo, which was well received and the crowd requested it four times.
He also treated fans to some of his classic hits such as Ezinangeni, Yamitha Kanjani, Ndwandwe, Xola, Ntombi Nto and the timeless, Umuzi Ka Baba.
Adding to the night’s energy were performances by Tshibilika duo Amathonga Amahle of Soft Life fame, along with DJs Keitho, Ayaxx and Flex, who kept the crowd entertained before and after Marabini’s set.
To capture a broad and vibrant sound, Marabini recorded Umjolo across four studios, Loud Records, Just Percy Studios, Elephant Head Studios and P3 Studios, and collaborated with a dynamic team of young creatives. These included drummer Erastus Nleya, producers Just Percy and Obey Mudiwa, bassist Master H, lead guitarist Thomas Madurure, keyboardist Oktopas, trumpeter Simba, saxophonist Benjamin, percussionist Bonginkosi, and backing vocalists Brian Awa, Khulekani and Tiae.
“This album is more than good music, it is a reflection of my music journey, emotions and cultural roots. It’s an intricate blend of my life experiences, moments of love, unity, peace and respect for culture that shape us all.
“Each track is meant to take listeners on a journey through life’s highs and lows, touching on themes such as love, loyalty, hope, disappointment and faith,” Marabini said.
The title track serves as a warning to those planning to fall in love, urging them to be cautious before fully dedicating and committing themselves.
