Hardrock FC 3-0 Simba Bhora
HARDROCK FC’s return to the summit of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League was about far more than three points.
Having surrendered pole position less than 24 hours earlier and arriving at Chahwanda Stadium without a win in their previous two outings, Kelvin Kaindu’s men needed a statement. They delivered one through the timely return of
Washington Navaya, whose clinical brace inspired a convincing victory over a Simba Bhora side increasingly searching for answers.
The significance stretched beyond the afternoon’s result. Hardrock not only reclaimed top spot but also showcased the depth, resilience and attacking quality that have made them one of the season’s surprise packages. For Simba
Bhora, the defeat deepened concerns over a run of performances that coach Mandla Mpofu later described as “worrisome.”
Navaya’s influence was immediate.
Back from national duty, the striker provided the cutting edge Hardrock had lacked in recent matches. His movement unsettled Simba’s defence throughout the first-half and his finishing punished every lapse in concentration.
The breakthrough arrived in the 32nd minute when Sambulo Simelane’s clever work created space for Navaya to apply a simple close‑range finish. It reflected Hardrock’s superiority during a spell in which they controlled territory, pressed aggressively and repeatedly forced Simba Bhora onto the back foot.
Ten minutes later, the striker produced an even finer effort. Neliswa Dlamini’s precise cross was expertly controlled by Navaya, who fired beyond the goalkeeper to give Hardrock a commanding advantage before half‑time.
That decisive spell ultimately settled the contest.
Although Simba Bhora improved after the break and enjoyed more possession, they struggled to turn territorial gains into meaningful chances. Carlos Mavhurume squandered a promising opening early in the second-half, while
McCartney Naweseb’s efforts failed to trouble the hosts consistently.
Hardrock’s organisation without the ball proved just as important as their attacking quality.
The midfield quartet of Munashe Bamara, Donald Mudadi, Dlamini and Simelane repeatedly won second balls and launched dangerous transitions. Every time Simba pushed forward, the hosts looked capable of punishing them on the counter.
Kaindu’s substitutions also had impact.
Samuel Makawa came off the bench to effectively end any hopes of a Simba comeback when his long‑range strike deflected into the net. The goal underlined one of the key differences between the sides: Hardrock’s bench strengthened them, while Simba struggled to find solutions.
The victory carried further significance.
Chahwanda Stadium had been under scrutiny following the ugly scenes that marred Hardrock’s previous home fixture against Dynamos. This time, the focus remained firmly on football as supporters from both sides created a vibrant atmosphere without incident, allowing the match itself to take centre stage.
Kaindu praised his players’ response to the pressure of the occasion.
“It is a very important win for us. We hadn’t won in the last two games and today we responded positively. Before kick‑off we had slipped from our position on the log, but we reacted well, scoring three goals.
“It shows the depth we have in the team. We made changes and those who came in did very well. We saw the value of Navaya because we missed him in the last two games and today he showed his impact.”
The Hardrock coach maintained that survival remains the club’s primary target, but performances such as this will only fuel growing belief that his side can achieve far more than merely avoiding relegation.
For Simba Bhora, the mood was starkly different.
Mpofu was left frustrated by his team’s inability to execute their game plan during the damaging spell late in the first-half — the period that ultimately decided the contest.
“A tough match for us. I am very disappointed. We had a good plan to close spaces around the box. We did well for periods, but I was disappointed with the last 10 minutes of the first-half. The scoreline is very disappointing and our team’s recent performances are worrisome.”
