HWANGE golfer Cephas Ncube and his partner Cuthbert Makukume netted a total of 77 points to win the second edition of the Zimbabwe National Army Charities Golf Tournament at Bulawayo Country Club on Saturday.Second was the duo of Benjamin Shoko and Francis Muketiwa who scored 74, counting out Sexton Mpofu and Keith Sissing who were tied on the same tally.
Former Highlanders chairman Roger Muhlwa and Nyararai Sibanda scored 73 to come fourth with Jonathan Jere and Brian Nyakutomba coming fifth with a score of 71.
However, the day belonged to Ncube and Makukume who had individual scores of 39 and 38 as they marched to victory against a well attended field on the day.
Ncube was part of the winning team at the inaugural tournament held at Bulawayo Golf Club. Officiating at the prize giving ceremony later in the evening on Saturday, Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army, Phillip Valerio Sibanda, thanked the golfers for responding to the call to help fundraise for its five charities.
“We are really grateful and I am impressed with the attendance. Earlier on when we came here we thought we would not have many players but someone told me not to worry as you guys here like to start playing golf at around 11am and true to that you all came in your numbers,” said Sibanda.
The golf tournament was part of the fundraising by the army for its five charities. A target of $15 000 from the golf tournament was set while $25 000 was targeted at the dinner dance which was held on Saturday evening at a local hotel.
One of their objectives is to build a boarding school in Kadoma and as well as provide for its troops that are deployed in the Mozambican border for demining exercises.
