WHEN young sensation Mafious Chihweta crossed the floor to join Scottland from Highlanders in the past days, there were many who believed he had made the wrong turn.
For him to get a place in a team with the likes of Knowledge Musona, Khama Billiat, Walter Musona, Terrence Dzvukamanja and other great and more experienced players, was a dream.
But on Saturday Tonderai Ndiraya proved everyone wrong, introducing the 19-year-old in the 56th minute.
And his arrival came with devastating effects as he made two assists in Scottland’s 5-2 demolition over former champions FC Platinum.
His first, a mesmerising, defence-splitting pass to Shidolo, left spectators in awe.
Picking up the ball at the edge of the box, Chihweta sliced through with an angled run, before threading a perfect pass, leaving Shidolo with a simple finish.
Speaking after the match, Chihweta couldn’t hide his joy for making his debut for a star studded Scottland, let alone playing alongside his idol Khama Billiat.
“Since I arrived at the club, the environment has been welcoming and friendly,” said Chihweta.
“The boys here made it feel like home for everyone. I’m happy playing with my seniors, especially my role model Khama Billiat. Coming in and making an immediate impact by providing two assists was a great feeling, and I wish to continue contributing with more assists and goals for the team.”
Chihweta was undoubtedly Bosso’s greatest find this season. And just when he seemed to be settling he was lured by the ambitious Scottland.
And the young player’s introduction at Mandava is a bold statement that they are not only looking at short-term but also into the future to redefine local football.
Now a point shy from log leaders Simba Bhora, it seems they are poised for a serious title chase.
For Chihweta, it is a chance to make history in his first season playing in the local Premiership. But he is looking beyond just that.
“My dream is to one day represent the country in the national team alongside my brothers,” he said.
