HISTORY will be made at this year’s Independence Gala as one of Matabeleland’s most beloved musical outfits, Ndolwane Super Sounds, makes its first appearance at the national showcase.
The group, which rose to prominence in the 1990s, briefly slipped off the radar before resurfacing in recent years, continuing to make a strong impact on the music scene.
Frontman Martin Sibanda joined the outfit in 1993 when it was still known as Big Four, a name that was later changed to Ndolwane Super Sounds. The group went on to release 14 albums that enjoyed considerable success before a split in 2011. The split came at a time when piracy was on the rise and music sales were dwindling, leaving many artistes struggling to earn a living from their work.
Over the years, Ndolwane Super Sounds has produced a catalogue of hits that continue to resonate with everyday listeners, with albums such as Bakhuzeni remaining firm favourites.
Sibanda hailed the Second Republic for finally recognising the group’s contribution to the arts.
“This will be our first time performing at the Independence Gala, and it’s truly an honour for our brand to be allowed to showcase on such a platform,” said Sibanda.
“I’m happy they’ve done the right thing this time. I’ve been around for a while and have always wondered why I was left out all these years. To be given a chance to perform at a national event is every artiste’s dream. For us, it is a major achievement. We thank the Second Republic and everyone who made this possible.”
Sibanda said the group has embraced the opportunity and is working hard to deliver a memorable performance.
“We promise attendees and everyone who’ll be watching from wherever they are, that we’ll bring our best. As always, I never disappoint,” he said.
