AM writing to express my concerns regarding the current selection criteria for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Soccer Star awards in Zimbabwe.
While the intention of recognising outstanding talent in our league is commendable, it has become increasingly evident that the process is flawed, leading to selections that do not accurately reflect the merits and performances of deserving players.
In recent seasons, we have witnessed players with lacklustre performances being named among the top 11, raising questions about the criteria used for these selections.
It is disheartening to see players who consistently demonstrate skill, dedication, and exceptional performance being overlooked, while others, who may have had fleeting moments of brilliance, are awarded accolades that they do not truly deserve.
This not only undermines the integrity of the awards but also diminishes the achievements of those who have genuinely excelled.
To remedy this situation, I strongly advocate for the integration of a more data-driven approach to the selection process.
Utilising statistics would provide a clearer, more objective assessment of player performances throughout the season.
Key metrics such as goals scored, assists, defensive contributions, successful passes, and minutes played can paint a comprehensive picture of a player’s impact on the game.
By relying on these statistics, the selection committee can ensure that players who have consistently performed at a high level are recognised accordingly.
Moreover, implementing a transparent and standardised evaluation system would foster trust in the selection process.
Fans, players, and clubs alike would have greater confidence in the integrity of the awards if they could see the data supporting each selection.

This change would not only elevate the prestige of the Soccer Star awards but also encourage players to strive for excellence, knowing that their efforts will be quantified and acknowledged based on performance rather than popularity or other subjective criteria.
In conclusion, I urge the Premier Soccer League to reassess their current selection criteria and embrace a more analytical approach to recognising talent within our league. By doing so, we can ensure that the Soccer Star awards truly reflect the best of the best, honouring those players who have made significant contributions to the sport in Zimbabwe.
The future of our footballing talent deserves recognition that is both fair and deserved.
Thank you for considering this important issue. I hope to see positive changes that will enhance the credibility of our league and its awards.
Muziwandile Nkomazana.
