Nees confident as Warriors troop into camp

Warriors coach Michael Nees has expressed confidence in his squad ahead of their matches against Namibia, despite several injury concerns.

The Warriors face Namibia on Thursday and again next Monday at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa in the 2025 Afcon qualifying matches.

Nees conducted a training session yesterday with players based in Zimbabwe and South Africa, who have already reported to camp. Players from other centres are expected to join today.

“We’re still awaiting some players. We have different groups – one from Europe, another from South Africa, and the third from Harare. We expect to be complete by tomorrow,” Nees said.

The Warriors have injury concerns, with forward Tino Kadewere ruled out due to a calf injury and Tawanda Chirewa sidelined with a thigh injury. Defender Munashe Garananga is doubtful due to an ankle injury.

Despite these setbacks, Nees remains optimistic. “Tino plays at a high level, and it’s unfortunate he’s injured. However, injuries are part of the game. We must assemble a squad that’s equally good, and the players here deserve our trust and confidence.”

Nees praised the team’s spirit, saying: “Everyone arrived in good spirits. The players’ mood was excellent in Uganda, and I think we can be happy with the group and characters we have.”

Thursday’s match will be played behind closed doors at Namibia’s request.

“Every footballer would want to play in front of a crowd, but it’s Namibia’s decision, and it doesn’t affect us. We hope everyone arrives on time tomorrow,” Nees added.

Striker Terence Dzukamanja, returning to the Warriors, said, “It’s great to be back in the national team, representing the country. I’m here to help the team. I’ve seen the quality, and I’m confident. The coach is very positive and has given us confidence.”

Zimbabwe will be searching for its first win in Group J following two opening goalless draws against Kenya and Cameroon.
The Warriors are currently occupying position three in the group with two points, two behind Kenya who are on top with four points, and the same with Cameroon who are second.
