Netball Gems skipper celebrates 28th birthday with top of the table Surrey Storm

ZIMBABWE International Felistus Kwangwa celebrated her 28th birthday yesterday with her Surrey Storm side comfortably on top of the 10-team Vitality Netball Super League.

There was outpouring of love for Kwangwa, who grew up in Bulawayo’s Njube suburb as she celebrated her birthday.

Surrey Storm are top of the table with 15 points from the six games played. Loughborough Lighting are in second place with 12 points from five games. They have the same number of points with London Pulse.

This season, Kwangwa has managed to make six appearances for her side, which means she has played in all their matches. Since joining Surrey Storm in 2020, Kwangwa has made 41 appearances.

Kwangwa was a standout player at the 2019 Netball World Cup with three Player of the Match performances in her maiden appearance at the global showpiece. She led the competition in deflections and was sixth for intercepts.

The Zimbabwean international did her primary school at Mtshede Primary School and her secondary studies at Sikhululile High School. She started playing for national teams in 2012 at the ageof 17.

She captained the Golden Girls at the 2014 Region 5 Games and also led the team at the 2018 Junior World Cup Qualifiers in Botswana.

Kwangwa won coach and fans’ Player of the Year awards following an impressive performance in the Vitality Netball League last season.

The highly rated Kwangwa, who plays as a defensive player also helped Zimbabwe to secure its second successive World Cup qualification last year when they finished third at the African qualifiers.

The Netball World Cup is scheduled to be staged at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from July 28 to August 6.

Held every four years, it is the first time that the Netball World Cup is taking place in Africa. — @innocentskizoe
