A 19-year-old man from Makokoba suburb in Bulawayo has appeared in court for alleged illegal possession of about 400 grams of dagga.

Terrence Banda appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mr Shingai Mutiro charged with unlawfully possessing 394 grams of loose dagga without a licence or permit.

He was remanded to Friday, August 7 for judgment.

Prosecuting, Ms Veronica Manyuka told the court that on August 3, at about 1pm, police officers from ZRP Queens Park received information that the accused was in possession of dangerous drugs at Savuka Bottle Store near Fairbridge Police Camp.

“Acting on the information, the police proceeded to the bottle store where they found the accused. They identified themselves and requested to search him and his belongings,” she said.

A search conducted in the accused’s room led to the recovery of a transparent plastic sachet containing dagga on his bedding.

The court heard that the accused was asked to produce a licence or permit authorising him to possess the drug, but failed to do so, leading to his arrest.

“The recovered dagga was taken to the Bulawayo Main Post Office, where it was weighed in the presence of the accused. It weighed 394 grams and had a street value of ZiG11 820,” said Ms Manyuka.
