Netball tournament to raise awareness against child marriages, drug abuse in Shamva

A netball tournament aimed at raising awareness against drug abuse, child marriages, gender-based violence, and empowering the girl child is set to be held in Shamva over the weekend.
The event is dubbed the Big Five tournament and is being organised by local businessmen, including Shamva Artisanal Miners Association vice chairman, Mr Sam Paul Nyati.
Teams that will participate include Mr Nyati’s Nyati Queens, Bradley High, Chipadze, Mvurwi High, and SOS Orphanage Home.
There will be lots of prizes to be won and musician Chief Hwenje Shumba is set to perform at the event.
In an interview, Mr Nyati said the Big Five tournament will be held at Chakonda Grounds.
“I came up with the idea of forming a netball team to promote the girl child and develop talent in the community,” he said.
“Most talented people in rural areas are not getting the platform to shine.”
He said his main aim is to promote the empowerment of women and girls.
“This idea came after a survey we did in our area, we have come to understand that we have a role to play economically and socially. There are a lot of child marriages and domestic violence cases in this mining area.
He said Nyati Queens and the Zimbabwe Republic Police netball team recently held an awareness campaign against drugs, domestic violence and the abuse of women.
