Econet was the first to introduce the service in October last year as it moved to keep abreast with international trends while Telecel joined the bandwagon in June this year.
An official manning the NetOne stand at the Harare Agricultural Show said that in the interim, the new service which was rolled out last month, was being offered to contract subscribers only.
However, plans were afoot to spread the internet service across the whole subscriber base, said the official.
“We started offering the broadband service last month,” he said.
“At the moment, only our contract subscribers can access the service.”
NetOne, which is the third largest mobile services firm, has less than one million subscribers.
The company has secured US$60 million from various financiers to fully develop its broadband project.
NetOne says it will cost about US$15 million to lay a fibre optic cable running from Harare to Beitbridge to link up with the undersea cable from South Africa.
Zimbabwe has embarked on the broadband project to enable faster internet, telephone connections and multimedia data transmission whilst making bandwidth cheaper.
Before rolling out the broadband facility, internet connectivity in the country was poor as it relied on satellite. Under the Medium Term Plan, Government intends to revamp the country’s telecommunications infrastructure in line with global trends. – New Ziana.
