Over 105 000 farmers have registered to grow tobacco for the 2021/22 tobacco planting season, up from 102 098 that registered in the previous season.

Presenting the post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said there had been a 28 percent increase in the area planted compared to last year.

“Regarding the planting of tobacco, some 105 528 farmers have registered for the 2021/22 tobacco season compared to 102 098 farmers that had registered at the same time last year, representing a 3 percent increase.

“The area planted is 28 percent above that planted last year, because of an enlarged irrigated crop,” she said.

Meanwhile, seed cotton deliveries have gone up by 59,1 percent with over 132 million kg having been delivered this year compared to 83 million kg delivered last year.

“The value of the seed cotton delivered to date is $6,38 billion,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
